Holiday Brunch
On Sunday, December 16th, several friends came over for Holiday Brunch: the Dirks, the Nashes, the Matthews (including Whitney), Tracey Duncan, and Vernice and Kenny Harris. On the menu was homemade waffles, mimosas (I think we went through 5 bottles of Champagne), some really good cheese grits and football for the guys.

El Paso Drive
This morning started quite early for me -- about 6:00 am in El Paso. I woke to plenty of snow on the ground. Being from Phoenix, seeing live snow is quite a treat, and I was sure that the girls would enjoy seeing and playing in the snow. I snapped a couple of photos of the snow.

We got on the road for our drive back to Phoenix at exactly 12:01pm (we had planned to leave at 12 noon -- so we were right on time). The drive across the desert southwest is anything but exciting. The only solace from the monotony of driving is that the speed limit on most of the drive is 75 mph -- which means that you are pretty safe up to 80 to 85 mph, although on some stretches even that speed feels like you aren't even moving.
The drive carries us through a few towns -- Mesilla and Las Cruces, NM; Lordsburg, NM right at the AZ/NM border, and then in Arizona -- Willcox, Benson, Tucson, Casa Grande, and then Phoenix. Click Here for a map of the drive. Door to door -- it takes about 7 hours, and it is 459 miles. With good mileage, our car will get about 450 miles to a tank, but we did this drive on one tank, and the low gas light came on just outside of Phoenix. (I ignored it for 20 miles until Lisa noticed it.)
The only other saving grace for our El Paso drives with the kids is the in-car DVD player and satelite radio. A couple of movies for the kids and Lisa and I can listen to good music without station searching or shuffling CDs.

Blacks and Dogs
Sooooo, tonight I came home from work a little early so that my wife, Lisa, could have a night out. I turn on the local nightly news, and there is a story being reported on regarding a local K-9 officer that somehow inadvertently left his dog unattended for 12 hours in a patrol vehicle and the dog died. It isn't clear why the officer left the dog unattended, and there is a bit of public outcry about this incident. (See this print story for background.)
Sooooo, the local news interviews a Reverend Paula T. Webb, a "animal rights chaplain," who purportedly feels that dogs are just like people, and should be treated as such. Anticipating critics who would say, well it was just a dog, Reverend Webb stated the following, "if you're going to say it's just a dog, then you would say, well, it's just a black person, it's just a Chinese person."
My mouth dropped. My wife's mouth dropped.
It is disappointing enough that a person in this day and age has the mindset to utter something so utterly stupid as this. What is more disappointing is that this is likely a person that likes black people, has black friends, didn't mean for this statement to be racially insensitive, and all the other niceties that people use when they say something that crosses the line. Rev. Webb didn't appear to me to be a shock-factor type person (a la Don Imus) who would say something just for the reaction. Instead, she appreared to be a well-intentioned person who finds animal rights as a cause and had a likely-rare opportunity to appear on the local news.
I would hope that she recognizes that her comments were wholly inappropriate.

Like my Dress ??
Maya loves to get herself dressed in the mornings now. So this morning, she decided to put on this beautiful summer sun dress. Quite appropriate as it is already 90 degrees outside at 9:30 am. So I decided to snap a few photos of her in her pretty dress, and this one came out quite perfectly.

We Have Artistic Talent
We all decided to paint bowls, so that we would each have our very own special breakfast bowl.

Sedona Jazz Festival
In October 2006, we traveled up to beautiful Sedona, Arizona to attend our first Sedona Jazz Festival. It is a very nice jazz festival, and the setting in Sedona is perfect for relaxing in the afternoon sun and listening to some great jazz. The headliner from 2006 was Earl Klugh. In between listening to sets and drinking some good wine, we asked someone sitting near us to snap this photo.

Maya's 3rd Birthday
On January 8, 2007, Maya Antoinette turned 3 years old. We celebrated her birthday at Little Gym in Glendale, AZ. Maya and a few of her friends romped and climbed and played at the gym. Afterwards we had cake and ice cream.
